NEW RELEASE VASCO: MORTIFYING ORDEAL OF BEING KNOWN
Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known is Vasco’s original take on the difficulties of navigating through relationships. The rawness of their sound allows us, listeners, to connect on an unexpected level. The most played song on iTunes, “Old CDs, feels like an electrifying experience of what it looks like to better yourself from a situation that left you feeling less than who you know you are. This project is full of riffs & rhythms that took me back to moments that reek of nostalgia. Vasco gives us a closer look at MOoBK and what inspired them to create this scintillating work of art.
THE HONEY: WHAT IS THE STORY/MESSAGE WITH YOUR SONG? WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION?
VASCO: Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known is an EP that explores the aspects of relationships I (Andrés, lead singer/songwriter) felt weren’t discussed in most songs. People often talk about sadness and anger but often omit more common symptoms of confusion, doubt, hope, broken pride, and disappointment. Mortifying Ordeal is, in its essence, a commentary on how difficult relationships can be. The album itself is a collection of songs written in the heat of the moment. I wanted, as a songwriter, to write songs that reflected a stream of consciousness as I processed the complexity of the relationships I was in.
The title was inspired by an essay written by Tim Kreider for the New York Times. The full quote is “if we want the rewards of being loved we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.” I think that pretty much sums up the sentiment in the album.
On the music side, we wanted something that felt truly ours. MOoBK was our chance to not take ourselves too seriously, opting for a mix that more closely resembled our live sets since we have always felt that we are, above everything else, a live band. We wanted to incorporate the fun, energy, and careless nature of our shows mixed in with a classic early 2000’s sound that we grew up with.
THE HONEY: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LYRIC OF THE SONG? BREAK IT DOWN FOR
VASCO: We have definitely gone back and forth as we were working on the tracks but I think my favorite now has to be Nose Ring. The lyric we all seemed to like the most is in American Dream: “You want a white picket fence dude, a guy who offends you. But I’m sure that baby you’ll have in a few years will fix everything”. This lyric really felt like it captured our message.
THE HONEY: ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE ABOUT THIS SONG?
VASCO: Although this album is just a piece of a larger storyline to come, our biggest desire is that people listen to it and feel something. Whether that is optimism, spitefulness, happiness, vulnerability, anger, or whatever feeling you would describe when you listen to a song at full volume in your car on your way home from work.
