AVA MCCOY NEW RELEASE: CLOSER TO THE BUGS
New York born and raised artist Ava Mccoy has released her EP “Closer to the Bugs,” where she mixes many genres including indie rock and R&B. Do we you have your attention now?! This was such a surprising combination for us, we didn’t even know what to expect until we listened; And it adds up. Her music feels very much like the city of New York, combining a mixture of elements and getting something completely unique and exhilarating as a result. As an EP with the goal of expressing risk, freedom and excitement, we think Ava Mccoy did just that. But, enough about what we think, read on to hear what went into “Closer to the Bugs,” from Ava herself!
THE HONEY: WHAT IS THE STORY/MESSAGE WITH YOUR EP “CLOSER TO THE BUGS”? WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION?
AVA MCCOY: “This EP came from a deep desire to take new risks musically. My last release was a full-length album that had a more melancholy feel. I have so many musical inspirations that span far beyond just folk and americana music, so representing that felt very important to me while moving forward as an artist. I wanted to continue a forest aesthetic for this project, as my last project was very tree-inspired, and I feel most home among lots of trees. “Closer to the Bugs” brings you back down to the forest floor and the harsh realities of your 20’s. My goal is to create a moment of freedom, excitement, and relatability through my work.”
THE HONEY: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SONG ON THE EP? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
AVA MCCOY: “’Comfort’ is definitely my favorite track on the EP. It’s such a new direction for me as a songwriter, and I feel it successfully ties in not only my indie rock inspiration but heavy elements of R&B music as well. The lyrics are so serious but not at all at the same time. I sing about Gatorade in that track. It came from a very real place of putting certain relationships on a pedestal, and seeing past their flaws. The intro and outro are some moments I never thought I’d emulate in my music. The music video shows me alone in New York with the activity of the city swirling around me. There is such a balance of feeling overwhelmed by the pace of the city but also feeling alone and swallowed up in all of it.”
THE HONEY: BEING BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY, DO YOU FEEL LIKE IT HAS ANY IMPACT ON YOUR SOUND AND INSPIRATIONS AS AN ARTIST?
AVA MCCOY: “Growing up in various bands and throwing myself into so many creative spaces here totally had a major influence on me as an artist. I saw people from all walks of life making their dreams happen on stages that vary in size and capacity. Success is subjective, and being in a place where creativity is respected and prioritized led to endless inspiration. The Punk and No Wave scenes that came out of the Lower East Side have always fascinated me. Seeing firsthand how the landscape of music is evolving in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn is so cool to witness in real time, and being involved is truly a dream come true.”
THE HONEY: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE ABOUT “CLOSER TO THE BUGS”?
AVA MCCOY: “I’m so grateful to anyone and everyone who gives this project a listen! It’s a piece of my heart, a time capsule of my life, and I can’t wait to share what’s next.”
